Community and Commitment

Community is important to us at Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters. We believe in doing our part to support efforts to make our community healthy and vibrant. Being in the specialty coffee business, we also have the benefit of belonging to a world community as well as our local one.

Locally, we donate proceeds from in-store sales to Breakfast in the Schools programs, we sponsor a Women's Soccer team, Theatre groups, High School fund-raisers, Story-Telling and Music Festivals and many more locally-based events.

We also donate coffee to Youth Conferences, Women's Centre, Transition Homes, F.A.S. Day, Yukon Conservation Society talks, Folk Music Society Coffee Houses, AIDS Walk, Soup Kitchens, and many other worthy causes.

Hopefully, by setting an example within our own lives, we can then have a firm footing on which to help others.

Within our coffee community, we are a member of Coffee Kids,(www.coffeekids.org) an organization that works to improve the lives of children and their families in coffee growing communities. We are also a licensee of Transfair Canada, and actively participate in promoting fairly traded coffee and education of consumers on their part in creating a sustainable coffee industry.

We are committed to doing our part to help create a sustainable industry. To us, this means helping where we can in our community, locally and globally, while still balancing our purpose of selling people the best coffee they can buy. This means many different things to many people, and our intent is to encourage awareness so that consumers can exercise their right of choice, which we believe to be the most powerful, lasting way to make a change toward sustainability.

We are also committed to taking steps to make our store create less environmental impact, by re-using by-products (coffee grounds, burlap, boxes, bags), reducing packaging and transportation pollution, and establishing a dialoge with other roasters/retailers to encourage manufacturers to create more products using recycled materials (take-out cups being a huge source of garbage locally and globally). Since our beginning, we have given a 25 cent rebate to those who faithfully bring their own cup- saving $$ is a great incentive to waste reduction!

We will keep you posted on our progress, any fund-raisers that you might want to contribute to (how about becoming a personal member of Coffee Kids?), and always be open and accountable for our actions. E-mail ideas, suggestions, etc are welcome!
